I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 2nd inst., in which you refer to certain statements alleged to have been made to you by Dr Eitel, the late Private Secretary to His Excellency the Governor, on the 20th of September 1881, and enclose copies of subsequent correspondence and other documents showing that Dr Eitel at first impugned the correctness of your narrative, but subsequently admitted its accuracy, and, as you think, such facts prejudicially and injuriously affect the character and efficiency of the Public Service of the Colony which Dr Eitel continues to hold.
